What is the word for bringing in cheaper foreign labor to fill domestic jobs?

July 31, 2009 - 10:52 pm 4 Comments

I have been using the word "insourcing" to refer to the practice of bringing in cheaper foreign labor to fill domestic jobs, such as with the H1-B visa program or with the hiring of illegal immigrants. That seems like an appropriate word since it is effectively the same thing as "oursourcing" (or more accurately "offshoring"), but in reverse. However, a check of online dictionaries and encyclopedias indicates that this is not the proper use of the word "insourcing". Thus, I’m wondering if there is a more appropriate word to describe the phenomenon that I describe?

What is the difference between a translator and an interpreter?

July 31, 2009 - 10:52 pm 8 Comments

For my health and social care assignment I have been asked to write about translators AND interpreters, I know that a translator translates from one language to another, but what is an interpreter because I thought it was the same thing.

Translating converts a language literal to another language.

Interpretation gives meaning or the context of to what is written or spoken of either the same language or a different language or what is seen. It is evaluating something than translating alone.

How different are the available translations of Anna Karenina?

July 31, 2009 - 10:52 pm 1 Comment

I am working my way through Anna Karenina and am considering buying an audio book to help out. Will the audio book be a lot different than the book I’m reading if the translations are different?

Thanks!

Just make sure the audio version is not abridged and you should be fine. Translations into English may have slight differences but not much unless one is abridged and the other is not.

What greek and roman accomplishments helped the spread of the gospel?

July 31, 2009 - 10:52 pm 3 Comments

I know that the koine greek helped immensely. And for those of you who are like "do your own homework", I am, i just want a little extra help. i am researching to. so, if you have anything about the greek and roman accomplishments helping the spread of the Gospel, It would be greatly appreciated. :) thanks!

It’s thanks to the Romans and Greeks that Europeans had a written language. The Romans also built an extensive transportation system involving roads and canals. These two innovations helped to rapidly spread Christianity. Books (e.g the Gospels) could be copied and sent far and wide. Priests were also able to travel long distances quite easily to spread the word.

How do I translate this word problem to a workable equation?

July 31, 2009 - 10:51 pm 2 Comments

I am having difficulty translating this word problem to numbers.
The instructions read: "Translate to a system of equation and solve"

Problem:
The difference between two numbers is 16. Three times the larger number is seven times the smaller. What are the Numbers?

I need to translate the english to math. Then I need to solve it, I’ve tried this and still cannot get it so I ask for help.
Thank you in advance everyone that will answer.

Let’s first figure out what we don’t know, and make those variables.
We need to find 2 numbers that follow those two rules.
Let’s call those 2 numbers x and y.

So the difference between the two numbers is 16.
x – y = 16

Three times the larger number (x) is 7 times the smaller (y).
So, 3 times the larger number is 3 * x = 3x
7 times the smaller = 7 * y = 7y
3x = 7y

One way to solve a linear equation is called "substitution", when you find x = something not related to x, and then plug that into the equation.

So since 3x = 7y,
x = 7y/3

Plug that into x – y = 16

7y/3 – y = 16

Since y = 3y/3 (the threes cancel)

7y/3 – 3y/3 = 16

See the common denominators? Let’s simplify.

4y/3 = 16

Let’s divide both sides by 4

y/3 = 4

Multiply both sides of the equation by 3

y = 12

Now plug again into the equation for y and solve for x

x – y = 16
x – 12 = 16
x = 28

The two numbers are 12 and 28.

Hope this helped!
