Why do so many people ask for Irish or Welsh translations?

September 28, 2009 - 7:18 am 9 Comments

I am Austrian. For me it was such a surprise to see that there are so many people asking for Irish or Welsh translations. Isn’t it more convenient to have one common language for Great Britain and Ireland? In the European Union they spend millions of Euros for translations. And a different language is often a reason for war, because the group of people with a different language is considered strange and not belonging to us. To say the truth, I am very worried. I think we’ve had enough wars in Europe, don’t we.

Probably because Irish and Welsh are both growing languages – ie more and more people are learning them.

I’m Welsh and don’t know much of thr Welsh Language, but I’m still interested to learn. Its a cultural/heritage thing.

How can I become a Greek Mythology teacher?

September 28, 2009 - 7:18 am 4 Comments

I’ve always been interested in Greek Mythology and want to be a teacher in the subject but don’t know what schooling I need to be a mythology teacher. Does anybody know?

First you should decide what level you want to teach, high school or college. For high school you would need to go to college and get your bachelor’s degree and teacher certification. It would probably take about 5 years. For college you will need a Masters degree or a PhD. Its up to you. Good luck.

How do I get into more organized habits?

September 28, 2009 - 7:18 am 7 Comments

I’m getting really fustrated. My room and den are a complete mess. They get cluttered with junk, clothes, and glasses. How can I get myself into a more organized state so I don’t have to clean the place up every week?

Start with your closets. Get rid of excess clothing and things that you’re storing but not using. Offer some things to friends, donate to Good Will, have a garage sale or sell them on ebay. This will free up space for what you’re actually wearing and using. Use a good storage system, like shelving or baskets. Put a cheap plastic clothes basket in the closet for your dirty clothes. Do a 5 minute "pick up" of the den every day. Even small efforts can make a difference.

How do you solve word problems using direct variation and linear models?

September 26, 2009 - 10:30 am 2 Comments

I am in Algebra 2 and I have a quiz tomorrow that is going to be on direct variation and linear models. I know the direct variation part, but I don’t understand how to solve word problems using linear models. For example: There were 174 words typed in 3 minutes. There were 348 words typed in 6 minutes. How many words will be typed in 8 minutes? The answer I got was 464, but I don’t understand how I can find a linear model.

For this kind of problem, you are looking for a rate, if you are not familiar with this term, it means that you are finding out how much happens per unit of time. In this case you are finding the number of words typed in one minute. To do this, you take the number of words typed, divided by the number of minutes it took. This gives you the number of words typed in one minute. Once you know that, you can multiply the rate (words per minute) by the number of minutes (x) which will give you an equation of :

y = (#words typed)/(# of minutes it took) * x

where x is the number of minutes.
btw, your answer is correct.

Is it true that Albanian men won’t tell their parents about a girl before they get engaged?

September 26, 2009 - 10:30 am 2 Comments

My boyfriend came here from Albania a couple years ago, so he is still VERY ALBANIAN, his entire family is in Albania and he talks with them frequently but he told me he can’t tell them about me until we are engaged. Is this a tradition? What’s up with this? Thanks in advance!

This is true to an extent. I know for sure that introducing one’s boyfriend/girlfriend to one’s parents means that you are very serious about the relationship. If things go well during that first meeting the next step is probably to meet the other partner’s parents. If that goes well as well then both parents will meet "over coffee" and exchange some token gifts. That is an "engagement".

What I sense here is some reluctance on your boyfriend’s part because you’re not Albanian. Albanians prefer to marry their own kind and that is even more true when it comes to Albanian men. This makes it even harder for him to introduce you to his parents.

Now since you live in West and he’s away from his family he could get engaged to you without you meeting his parents. But it’s hard for him to tell them about you if you’re not engaged because he’ll be bombarded with questions about you and will have to explain why he’s "wasting" your time with you instead of trying to find some "nice Albanian girl".

I know it might be hard for you to understand but it’s a cultural difference that is hard to overcome especially for someone who’s only been away from Albania for 2 years. My parents have lived in America for 12 years now and they still want my brother (who came to this country as a 13 yr old) to marry an Albanian girl. He’s dated a lot of non-Albanians but has never brought any of them home.

Best of luck Alessandra.

How come chinese translations are posted in some government offices of Vancouver?

September 26, 2009 - 10:29 am 2 Comments

I thought that in Canada, there are only two major languages – English and French. But how come in Vancouver schools and some government and nonprofit offices, chinese translations are posted beside english announcements instead of the french translation?

If chinese translations are provided, how come other languages were not provided? Are the chinese exempted from learning English? Will Vancouver eventually be a Chinese speaking area just like the French speaking areas in Quebec?

Because Vancouver was a popular place for Chinese immigrants from Hongkong, China and etc.

The Chinese population must have increased quite a fair bit, and that some of these Chinese do not know how to speak English and French.
Hence, the authorities place chinese translation for these people. As for not having french, maybe they think most Canadians are conversant in both English and French, hence only one major language is required to convey the posts

How can i make a model of the Greek Trojan Horse?

September 26, 2009 - 10:29 am 5 Comments

I need to make a model for school. It doesn’t have to be a Trojan Horse(u know the big wooden thing the greeks hid in to win the trojan war), but it has to be greek. I want to make a trojan horse though. Does anyone have any idea how to do this? I have looked all over the internet and cant find anything! It has to be on a base, and the base can be no bigger than 22 inches by 16 inches. Help!

Trojan Horse, Draw an outline in paper of the side view. Cut out of plywood 2 copies of the side. Obtain a bunch of popsicle sticks and Tongue depressors. These are for the cross- members. All of these things are available in a crafts store. You will need rods for the wheels and 4 wheels. Make sure that the scale is correct. You can use instant glue to hold the wood in place, or you can use a hot glue gun. Both don’t require a bunch of clamps, just a few minutes of hold time.
Hope that this gives you the start you need. Post a photo of your finished project! Regards, Steve
