For example, if you were born on the 18th of August, and you are now celebrating your 18th birthday, what specific word defines this once-in-a-lifetime occurance. A child celebrating his/her 8th birthday on the 8th of that month is the same celebration as a 30 year old celebrating that birhtday on the 30th of his/her month. What specific word defines this occurance?

Golden birthday!

What are the best translations of the odyssey and The Illiad?

November 27, 2009 - 10:18 pm 4 Comments

I want to read a version that is english but still close to the original. I dont want the versions that are easy to read I feel that reading dumbed down versions of classics books helps no one.

I’d like to recommend the ones translated by Professor E.V. Rieu published by Penguins in paperbacks some 20-25 years ago but, as far as I know, his translations’ve been regarded as one of the best.

Can a greek orthodox be a godmother of a catolic?

November 27, 2009 - 10:17 pm 7 Comments

I am a greek-orthodox and my little niece is catholic. She is going to have her 1 communion this June and wants me to be her godmother. According to a catholic tradition can I participate in this ceremony and be her godmother?

I don’t particularly understand the question because you get godparents at baptism, and not at first communion. For baptism, at least one godparent must be Catholic, and the other can be pretty much anything. Those godparents are godparents for life, and the child gets no more after that. In other words, the godparents gotten at her baptism would be her godparents during her 1st communion as well.

How does bacteria get into the lungs from the upper respiratory tract?

November 27, 2009 - 10:17 pm 2 Comments

Like in meningitis, how do these bugs travel so well into the lungs?

Certain types of meningitis are unique in that the microbes become suspended in the air and can remain that way for an extended period of time. Disease that spread in an airborne fashion, such as meningitis and tuberculosis, are delivered to your lungs by simply breathing.

For other diseases, such as bacterial pneumonia, the migration to the lungs is more difficult. The trachea is lined with cells that secrete mucous and other cells that have microscopic hair-like projections. Mucous is constantly produced and swept outward. This catches most microbes and expels them from the respiratory tract before they can cause problems.

Diseases make it past this system when we don’t expel the mucous in a timely manner. This can be because we are lying in bed for prolonged periods of time, after a surgery for example, or when it hurts to cough as with fractured ribs or other chest injuries.

There are several other things that can make it easier for bacteria to enter the lungs, but this is what it has to overcome.

What’s the word to describe something taking place when you’re explaining the process itself?

November 25, 2009 - 11:01 am 2 Comments

This is hard to explain. What’s the word to describe the event that takes place when you’re explaining an event while at the same time carrying out the said event.

For example, there is a saying "90% of all quoted statistics are made up"

In this sentence, the action of quoting a statistic is what’s taking place, furthermore, the purpose of the sentence is to explain that statistics themselves are usually made up. So, it’s a sentence that describes it’s own behavior.

Is there a word that describes this act/event?

Case-in-point. Not a word, I know, but the phrase fits.

Why have the Macedonians lied and influenced the national census to belittle the actual number of the Albanian

November 25, 2009 - 11:01 am 1 Comment

The actual number of Albanians is over 40% but they claim it is 20/25%.

yea i’m sorry to tell you this but the % thing is a lie
they just throw up a radom number and a percent sign and tell you to beleive in it, no man they lie and they make it up
i don’t know why they do it, maybe it’s to make the macedonians feel safer

how to find jobs as a translator or interpreter?

November 25, 2009 - 11:01 am 2 Comments

I am a native Chinese who has been here in the US for 17 years. Since I have lived in both countries for roughly the same amount of years, both languages feel natural to me. I would like to find jobs as a translator or interpreter but don’t know how to get started. Any suggestions are welcome!
Also, I am not a teenager. I am in my 30’s. I am also a permanent resident in the US. So there should not be any legal problems!

I suggest you put together a resume and send it out to companies that might need a translator. Hopefully you live in a big enough city where many people speak Chinese. Send your resume to court houses. You should also try to talk to recruiters, if you look in the phone book under employment they may know of jobs like what you are looking for.
