Who is the most influential Albanian?

October 2, 2009 - 9:27 am 3 Comments

For a school project I need to come up with the most important Albanian in like the last 50 years. Is there like someone who helped end the communist rule? I don’t know much about the country or its history. I was hoping someone here would know more than I do and could help.

Thanks.

PS. They could also be a major icon of some sort.

The most important would be Enver Hoxha – he was the communist dictator who ruled the country for 40 years (1944-1985) and was the pillar of the totalitarian society in Albania until the fall of communism, 6 years after his death. He is not a good figure, but he was by all means the most influential of the 2nd part of XX century.

If you want a good influential figure, Mother Teresa is one. She was Albanian but her main influence was not in Albania, but in the international scene.

An inspiring influential figure whose impact was direct for Albania is Ismail Kadare – a great writer who started to produce literary works from 1960 and is still very active. He has been a obel prize candidate several times with different works. Apart from being very talented and in avant-guard with his very original way of thinking and writing, an outstanding feature that carachterizes him is that he managed to write against the communist regime without being considered a dissident writer – although he was.

What is the best way for me to learn ALBANIAN language?

September 30, 2009 - 5:32 am 3 Comments

Is anyone currently learning or can anyone recommend any way?

I presume it’s fairly difficult???.
Im from UK and unfortunately I cannot speak any other language except English.

It’s not that difficult, but more difficult to master than some European languages. Be very careful of the learning method you use. Linguists, and people with vast experience in learning languages will almost always agree on the fact that most language learning methods out there are 50-70 percent fluff! It’s pretty easy to get away with telling you that you’ll be able to speak a language when for example, someone says "hello", they’re speaking English, and it doesn’t mean they can actually communicate. Being semi-fluent means you have a functional comprehension of at least 65% in the conventional range of that language, while fluent would be anything greater than 80%. If you don’t have the time to learn Albanian properly, and you’re after something quick and easy, then you’re probably headed towards disappointment. The best method to getting as far as you can get in the shortest period of time is called the “3 step”. The first step is to complete a FULL Pimsleur (MUST BE PIMSLEUR) course. Listen to each lesson at least 2 times, taking notes the first time with new vocabulary and studying before listening the second time. The 2nd step is to form a list of the 3,000 most common/frequently used words/vocabulary in English, to also include the eight parts of speech (verbs, nouns, pronouns, adverbs, adjectives, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections), which you can search the web for. Once you’ve formed the list, you need to find accurate generic-translations, which you can apply to most common case scenarios of Albanian (definatley the most challenging part of all this).Once that’s done, make flash cards or whichever method works best for you in memorizing vocabulary, but try to include each word in a sentence, in addition to just the new word and it’s meaning. Repetition is the key here, so this would also be a good time to solidify your pronunciation. After you’ve memorized all that, the 3rd step is to locate 4 movies that are preferably some kind of Disney movie, or anything of a slower pace. Childrens movies seem to work best for this. Watch the movie in Albanian with good, quality English subtitles. Watch ONLY these same 4 movies continuously as much as possible, to the point where you know what’s going to be said next. Try to plan completing each step in this order, exactly as described within a time-frame of about 8-10 months. When you’re done, you should be somewhere in the range of “semi-fluency”, at the point where learning after the “3 step” is quick and easy, and being close to fluent after 2 years of using it everyday, and learning at least an additional 100 new vocabulary words a month during that time. You’ll thank me when you’re done!

What is it about mexican woman that Albanian men love?

September 28, 2009 - 7:18 am 2 Comments

I have been with my boyfriend for 10 months and I have 2 kids from a prior marriage.. he loves me but I have heard and read so many things that Albanian men marry only Albanian women and such virgins as well.. lol falemenderit shume

What isn’t there to love about Mexican Women?

The ones I have met, generally, all have good values and are fiercely loyal to a fault. They understand the importance of family. They partner with their men like no other.

Then their appearance is incredable. The dark hair, beautiful brown skin, those wonderful brown eyes, and the way they dress. These are extremely beautiful women like no other.

These girls have got it all together. Personally, I think anyone that does not love these wonderful women is crazy.

What is it about Mexican Women that is not to love?

Good luck.

Is it true that Albanian men won’t tell their parents about a girl before they get engaged?

September 26, 2009 - 10:30 am 2 Comments

My boyfriend came here from Albania a couple years ago, so he is still VERY ALBANIAN, his entire family is in Albania and he talks with them frequently but he told me he can’t tell them about me until we are engaged. Is this a tradition? What’s up with this? Thanks in advance!

This is true to an extent. I know for sure that introducing one’s boyfriend/girlfriend to one’s parents means that you are very serious about the relationship. If things go well during that first meeting the next step is probably to meet the other partner’s parents. If that goes well as well then both parents will meet "over coffee" and exchange some token gifts. That is an "engagement".

What I sense here is some reluctance on your boyfriend’s part because you’re not Albanian. Albanians prefer to marry their own kind and that is even more true when it comes to Albanian men. This makes it even harder for him to introduce you to his parents.

Now since you live in West and he’s away from his family he could get engaged to you without you meeting his parents. But it’s hard for him to tell them about you if you’re not engaged because he’ll be bombarded with questions about you and will have to explain why he’s "wasting" your time with you instead of trying to find some "nice Albanian girl".

I know it might be hard for you to understand but it’s a cultural difference that is hard to overcome especially for someone who’s only been away from Albania for 2 years. My parents have lived in America for 12 years now and they still want my brother (who came to this country as a 13 yr old) to marry an Albanian girl. He’s dated a lot of non-Albanians but has never brought any of them home.

Best of luck Alessandra.

If I steam clean my walking boots will it stop them from smelling like an Albanian old sock recycling centre?

September 22, 2009 - 7:22 am 10 Comments

They took me ages to break in and get comfortable but they now honkyity tink a bit well quite a bit actually.
Help?

hmmmmm … what I suggest is that you send a shipment of 5 week old ricotta cheese, ground beef, cabbage & pasta roll {unrefrigerated of course} to that Albanian Sock Recycling Centre, followed by a news crew. Then when the news gets out how BAD they now smell ….. why your old boots are like snuffing up rose petals.

how is alexander the great albanian?

September 20, 2009 - 7:33 am 12 Comments

albanians say that alexander the great is albanian or illyrian thats what their called in the ancient world.statues from the ancient world show how a person looks like when they were alive.ancient illyrian statues are different.ancient macedonian statues and greek statues are similar.alexander doesn’t look like hes illyrian.how is it.
all i want to know is how is alexander the great albanian but he has no features of an albanian or illyrian he looks more greek.

1-
"Albanian" is a more recent idiom, so I wouldn’t call him Albanian. However, his mother is of Epirot-Illyrian origin and there is a continuity between Epirotes and modern Albanians.

Nonetheless, he called himself Macedonian, so lets just leave it at that.

2-
How the heck do you know what he really looked like !?

Dude, if I had to sculpt the portrait of a great man, I’ll make him look a little like ME !!!

So ask yourself, who made this statue of him that you’re talking about?

Does anyone know where i can find recipe for Albanian cuisine Pite?

September 18, 2009 - 10:28 am 2 Comments

Mire dita everyone:)
I am looking for a recipe for the Albanian cuisine for pite. I could always ask my Albanian friends, but i want to surprise them by making it.

So does anyone know where I could find a recipe for this?
Shum falimiderit
(thank you very much)

mpuqi Lene

Pite

Ingredients:

1) Two pounds of flour

2) One table spoon of salt

3) Water

4) Scallions

Recipe:

First you divide the dough into 4 ounces each. You put oil between each one. You flatten each dough and put one on top of the other. 4) You spread it like a pizza. 5) You put it in a round pan. After spreading out your dough, it’s time to cut the scallions. To cut the scallions, you cut them into little pieces and mix it with sour cream, yogurt, and salt. Put the scallions on top of the dough. Add two more sheets of dough on top of it. Put it in the oven at about 360 degrees. Leave it to cook for about 40 to 50 minutes. After your Pite is cooked, take it out of the oven and cover it with aluminum foil and let it cool off for about 10 minutes. After it cools off, cut it like a pizza pie and then it’s time to eat! ENJOY!

How many Greek Jews died in Pindos, defending Greece from the Italians and their Albanian servants?

September 16, 2009 - 1:27 pm 4 Comments

They were not many Jews in Greece? What’s the percentage then?
I am talking about WWII for those who didn’t understand.

Oh here you are again.

Most of Jews didnt fight.
They were hiding from the Germans and Greeks helped them to hide

As you can see ,by a site that is NOT Greek and is by JEWISH people made ,you find that most of them didnt fight during WW2 but they were hiding mostly.
You can have a clue, without asking questions here.

I was sure that you were a hard-core Zionist. There is no other explanation about your hate towards Greeks.

(question: whats your quotes about Greece during Hanukah?)
