How do I stop rain from leaking into my floorboard?

February 15, 2010 - 8:57 am 3 Comments

I found out after buying a 1973 Pontiac Ventura, that whenever it would rain it would leak water into the passenger floorboard. So I bought a car cover to keep it covered during the rain. What can I do to stop the leak?

I think it’s leaking somewhere around the passenger fender into the cab, somehow. Anybody else had/have this problem and have any tips?

The vents under the wipers are for the heater/air conditioner in the space below them is a large area for incoming air. at either end under the fenders there should be an oblong hole you will have to remove the fender to get at them. These plug up frequently in that style of GM product clear the holes and the water will run out. behind the fenders instead of down the firewall to the floor. The other issue is usually a bad windshield seal. if the windshield fogs up at the bottom you will have to remove the glass replace the seal reinstall the glass. The 1973 Chevy were known for the pillars rotting out if you pull the glass and the lip for the pinch-weld is missing or bad the piller will have to be welded. Do not cover this up as this is a part of the safety cage of this car.

How do I enter into a land contract with my landlord?

February 8, 2010 - 2:12 am 3 Comments

I am currently renting a double-wide on my landlord’s property in Kentucky and we are considering entering into a rent-to-own type of deal. What steps do I need to take to enter into this type of agreement? Is there anything I should be concerned about? What have your experiences been in land contract agreements?

Spend the money to let an attorney set up the contract for you. I have personally seen 2 people lose their rent to own deal by the many loopholes that the contract has to let the original owner out if he gets an offer he can’t refuse from someone else. The market could turn in his favor and if you’ve paid one time late he can take it back, or if you got a pet or something like that not in the contract. So consult a real-estate attorney.

Starting into Photography, What is the best program for editing digital photos?

February 5, 2010 - 2:08 pm 6 Comments

I have been told that Adobe Photo shop is the way to go but I really would like some input before I drop all that cash. I am looking into Portrait and nature photography. I would like to use one program only and I want to be able to do all sorts of things, for instance, adding hints of color to B&W images, changing filters etc… Any input would be helpful. If anyone has used Adobe tips would be welcomed too! Thank you so much.

I liked and used Corel Photo Paint for several years. Photo Paint is compatible with Photoshop, in that any plug-in you can buy for Photoshop is supposed to work with Corel Photo Paint.

The two programs don’t work the same way — so when you’re learning one, you’re not learning the other.

In my opinion, Photo Paint is easier to use, and I prefer Photo Paint’s methods for selecting areas/masking.

However, there’s no substitute for Photoshop. Every photo magazine you pick up has a how-to using Photoshop. There are a million books on Photoshop in your local bookstore. There are several good online tuturials for it, also. You’ll ultimately end up using Photoshop one day; there’s no avoiding it.

For all the things you’ve said you want to do — adding color tints, adding filters, etc. — either program will work.

How to turn a motor into a generator and use it to charge a car battery?

January 27, 2010 - 2:43 am 3 Comments

I am planning to build an electric vehicle and I would like to have regenerative brakes to increase its travel range.

Some people say that a motor and a generator are basically the same thing.

But how come a car alternator doesn’t turn on its own even when it’s connected to a car battery?

I plan to power the electric motor with four 12volt batteries connected in series to make a total of 48volts.

What should I do to be able to instantly convert the motor into a generator (to convert kinetic into electrical energy and charge
the batteries) as the vehicle is in motion?

is there a need for some complicated circuit boards to do this?

if I were able to switch the positive and negative connections to the motor as the vehicle is moving then would it charge the batteries?

The simple answer is "Yes", you need some complicated circuitry to make the power flow in the desired direction upon command.

Both ac machines and dc machines can be used as motors or generators under the right conditions.

An alternator is basically a permanent magnet AC generator with a diode bridge at the output, so power only flows OUT of its terminals. That’s why it won’t motor.

A regular squirrel cage induction motor can be used as a generator, if there is an external ac source to provide the necessary excitation, and the external prime mover rotates faster than synchronous speed. Big wind turbines commonly use this approach.

To do what you want for automotive applications, you need a power electronic converter that can adjust the voltages on the fly to direct power either into the machine (as a motor), or out of the machine (as a generator). Note that this is very different from just changing the polarity between battery and motor.
If you only switch the applied polarity, the motor just tries to quickly change to spinning in the opposite direction. This works for braking, but puts a LOT of heat into the motor. Power is still flowing from battery to motor, and no re-generation occurs.

How do you get into the yellow tunnel in the first mini castle in New Super Mario Bros for the ds?

January 24, 2010 - 8:17 pm 2 Comments

For the DS, in world 1, in the first mini castle there is a yellow tunnel to the left that is too high to get to. I have tried every way to get into the tunnel but without a ground to walk on I can’t get him to go in. It is right near the tunnel that shoots you straight up the door before the boss.

That pipe is an exit pipe which is impossible to enter. To get to the other end, you have to go back to the door a little farther down (you will have to use the pipe below or wall jump to get to it). Once you enter the door (the room will have a lot of moving blocks), you should see a hole where there are no blocks that is above and to the right of the door. Walk off-screen (to the right, through the hole) and you will be sent to the secret room. If you have Shell Mario, you can break the blocks to the right and enter the red pipe to the secret exit. If you do not, you’ll have to enter the yellow pipe and get sent to the exit pipe, which is the one you found.

How much is it safe to plug into one outlet?

January 13, 2010 - 4:04 am 8 Comments

I use power strips all the time at my open mic and plug ACs for all kinds of things into them, along with a couple of amps and other stuff. Sometimes I plug an extension cord into the power strip. The cord has three more outlets at the other end and I use those sometimes too.

When does it become dangerous to plug more stuff into one outlet? Will it blow it out? Help!!
Please leave a real, sincere answer.

First of all…there are safety factors that is already in place…your outlet strip should have a small reset button on the housing…it is a simple as a little black button…this is the first defense against a unsafe condition.

This button will operate when heat builds up due to the demand of your stuff that your using…reaches the limit of that safety device. When this happens…there is your first warning…that whatever you had plugged in, was too much for that strip device.

Should your breaker in your panel trips…then you must take action to reverse this condition! By resetting the breaker over and over again, is not an answer!…the breaker is only a device, and such device will eventually break down…and if you choose to continue this practice, then you are inviting an unpleasant situation.

You can have 50 cords on an outlet and do nothing…it all depends on what is being plugged in that determines the energy being used.

If you do not have a safety reset button on your strip, then toss it away, and invest in a better make of strip.

The bottom line…it is not the amount of cords you have plugged in that is the concern…it is what you have plugged into that is the focus and the signs given to you.

What does the doctor take into account when prescribing glasses?

January 10, 2010 - 12:44 am No Comments

Are there certain levels that mean the doctor will or won’t recommend glasses?
What will he have seen or taken into consideration if he tells you that you should be wearing them most of the time?

He considers the purpose of your visit.
Your complaint.
Your history. Age.
Your visual acuity with and without your present glasses.
Indications of pathology.
Whether or not glasses or contacts will help.
What visual acuity can be obtained.
Whether you can accept the correction.
What problems might be anticipated.
Whether or not the patient can pay. etc.

How do I go about getting into a Yahoo account of a loved one that has recently passed away?

My dad died on Dec. 15, 2009. I need to be able to get into his account to see if there are any online accounts that need closing, friends that he has that we need to let know of his passing, etc. How do I go about getting into his Yahoo account?

I am sorry for your loss. Yahoo is very strict about it’s privacy policy, even in death. Unless you know your fathers ID name and password, you may not be able to access his account at all. I suggest you contact Yahoo and talk with them.
