Their translation differs from the old testament in the King James and some other bibles. Do you trust a Rabinnically-approved Translation by ultraothodox Jews more than the old testament of the bible you currently own?

Because it truly is. Asking Xians if they can ‘trust’ JEWS when it comes to the JEWISH scriptures, is really funny.

The Xian ‘old testament’ is just a Church-produced, wrongly REorganised and MIStranslated version OF the Jewish Tanakh.

I need some help with some translations. I started school today and I’m in my fourth year. I feel like I should know these but I haven’t used any Spanish for a few months and I’m out of practice.
I’ve already translated all of the sentences into Spanish but these three:

You can use "acabar de + infinitive" to mean "just did" whatever.

So,

Acabo de llegar (aqui).

Marta acaba de contestar la pregunta.

Acabamos de leer el libro.

For actually reading from beginning to the end I prefer King James and NIV, but which translations of the Bible seem to be the most reliable versions?

The King James and the NASB are the most accurate English translations….

The NIV is, well lets just say….its not very good….>

For an easy reading English translation, I would recommend the ESV. Its not as accurate as the NASB or the KJV.

I have to read it for school and my copy of the odyssey calls Odysseus ‘Ulyssses’ while my copy of the Iliad does not. Do I have the wrong translation & does it matter?

Ulysses is the Anglo-Saxon translation of the name. It is OK. As for your question – there are always differences when it comes to translation from another language. So, yes, most probably, there are differences between Greek and Latin.

I used to charge one euro per line for 12pt script, but that’s a few years ago now. I imagine it’s about Eur2 per line these days.

I’ve read the translation by Burton Raffel many times and I absolutely love it. It remains one of my favorite works of classical literature. Can anyone refer me to other authors who have translated it to modern English?

My copy(a bilingual with the original text next to the English) is by Seamus Heaney.

No language translates perfectly, so how much meaning do we loose by reading translations from Hebrew, Greek, Norse, etc. Are we honestly getting the whole picture?

It depends on the text, as well as the translation.

The I Ching, for example, is written in a very ancient form of Chinese, at a time when Chinese writing was more inclined to represent concepts than actual phonetics. Most of the references were related to the Shang and Chou dynasties, which were little more than myth until just recently. And the modern reading was heavily influenced by Taoist and Confucian interpretations (often failing to differentiate between the original Chou I and the Confucian commentaries). In that case, quite a bit was lost in translation.

In the middle you have works like the Iliad. Modern translations typically get the meaning spot on, but are completely incapable of reproducing the rhythmic structure and emphasis of the original Greek.

Then you have modern editions of Aristotle that are based on the best manuscript evidence, complete with a lexicon and concordance in the back, and capable of providing a very clear and concise translation of the original.
