What is the word in which government officials become greater in authority untruthfully or wrongfully?

October 30, 2009 - 5:39 am 3 Comments

Or to be more specific, what is the word where – for example – a person becomes a king because of coup or another untruthful reason.

I know there is a word…I saw it on wikipedia one time!!

Please and thank you!

The verb form of the word is: "usurp."
"The Sheriff of Nottingham wanted to USURP the power of the King’s Guard."

The person who ‘usurps’ is called a USURPER.
"Dick Cheney attempted to be a USURPER of the power of the President to be his own."

The act of ‘usurping’ power is called USURPATION.
"A tripartite governmental system of checks-and-balances by means of independent branches is one way to guard against the unwarranted USURPATION of power."

What is the word for the opposite of concatenate?

October 27, 2009 - 9:38 pm 4 Comments

I don’t want to use the word "deconcatenate". Is there another word that basically means to take a series of combined items, and pull them back apart into their original pieces? I’m thinking mainly in the context of computer programming.

Words like split, substring or tokenize would be for splitting a series of combined items but to do it in such a way that the result is a set of strings you had previously concatenated… I don’t think there’s any specific word but I’d probably use the phrase "reverse concatenation"

How do you make Microsoft Word start in Safe Mode all the time?

October 25, 2009 - 8:36 pm 2 Comments

For some reason, when I open Word, it doesn’t respond. So I end task and open it again, and it comes up with the message, "Word failed to start correctly last time. Starting Word in Safe Mode will help you correct or isolate a start up problem in order to successfully start the program. Some functionality may be disabled in this mode. Do you want to start in Safe Mode?" I click yes, and it works fine. Does anyone know how to default the "Safe Mode" setting?

Your initial problem may be a corrupted global template. Instead of trying to start in Safe Mode, try this and see if it fixes that.

1.Close all copies of MS Word.
2.In Windows Explorer (My Computer) go to the directory

c:\Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates.

(in Word Vista, go to:

C:\Documents and Settings\your username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates

)

3.The Normal.dot template (in Word 2007, Normal.dotx or Normal.dotm) should be in this directory. Change its name to Normal.dot.bak. (So if this doesn’t work, you can change it back.) If there is a file ~$Normal.dot (note the funny characters at the front), delete it.
4.Try Word again. It should find Normal.dot missing, recreate it, and, hopefully, give you back your functionality.

Good luck.

How do I stop Microsoft Word from automatically capitalizing words for me?

October 23, 2009 - 6:21 pm 4 Comments

I’m writing a chemistry paper. Word keeps "helping" by capitalizing letters and words when it thinks they should be. It’s not helpful! A lower case k means something very different to an uppercase K! It’s even worse when it does it to a Greek letter. Is there some way I can make it so that Word simply wont capitalize for me?

Like mentioned above, it’s possible that a box could pop up, but sometimes this is not likely.

In the case that no box pops up…

Get into Word
Misspell a word – any weird word will work :-)
When you see the red squiggly line under it – Right Click.
Go to AutoCorrect, and then AutoCorrect Options

At the bottom of this dialog box is a long list of Replace:With options. You can either find everything individually that is giving you trouble and fix it all in that list…

Or, even temporarily, just ‘Unclick’ the box at the very bottom:
"Automatically use suggestions from the spelling checker"

After you’re done writing your Chem paper…’Check’ that option back so you don’t fudge on a resume or something like that…

Good luck!!!

What is the word for that overpowering stench of a garbage dumpster?

October 19, 2009 - 8:37 pm 4 Comments

I think there is an actual word for it, like "cunari" or something, but a standard search hasn’t turned up anything. I am NOT looking for generic adjectives that describe a bad smell; there is a word that specifically means the odor of a garbage dumpster. Please, no amateur comedic attempts. Serious question looking for a serious answer.

Well …."overpowering stench" was enough to bring that
"bad smell" to my consciousness.
Banning "amateur comedic attempts" put me out.
You may get some help from the Seniors section ……
My Grandmother had a word for everything ……

What is the word that basically means: techniques to memorize things ?

October 14, 2009 - 2:21 am 3 Comments

Lets say i want to memorize the sentence:

Lay over very energy ( not that this makes sense … im just trying to explain my self ) so i memorize the word LOVE which is cuz the first letters of each word make up that word … this is basically i technique for memorizing ?

That’s a mnemonic device.

Other words that are related are hint or clue, but those aren’t exactly what you’re talking about.

An example of a mnemonic is Never Eat Slimy Worms for North, East, South, West, to memorize where the arrows point in a compass.
Another mnemonic I learned was when I learned to play the piano. The solid lines on the treble cleft are EGBDF, so I memorized it by saying "Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge." The blank lines of the treble cleft are much easier to learn, because it just spells "FACE" !!! :-D
