What are the best Greek foods to serve if I am having a Greek sampler night?

December 15, 2009 - 12:30 pm 5 Comments

My family and I want to have a Greek food night sometime this week. I have really gotten into Greek food lately and I would like to cook for my folks.

What are the most common Greek foods that are a good start for people who have never really had it before. My parents never really had Greek and I have only recently started enjoying it.

Thanks!!!!!!

Some common Greek appetizers to think about:

Spanikopita
Tiropita
Stuffed Grape Leaves (Dolmades)
Pita Bread with a Greek Tzatziki Sauce
Cocktail Meatballs (Keftedakia)
Greek Brushetta (Grilled bread topped with tomatoes and Feta cheese, called Riganatha)
Saganaki (Fried Feta cheese)

Here is a website with the recipes if you need help. But these were some simple, Greek appetizers and starters.

BAKLAVA. it used to be really hard to make, but the times have changed and there are really fast and easy recipes. get on-line and find one of those recipes.

or you could go with a greek salad with the feta cheese, the purple greek olives in it. make sure they are pitted though. find a greek dressing, chop up a purple onion, use some spring mix, or just look on-line for a good one.

and you must go online and find a recipe on how to properly roast a lamb greek style.

    lamb is very tender.

i had a greek adoptive mom and her mom used to "throw down" with the lamb.

First of all…perogies aren’t Greek…nor do they contain spinach or feta…they are a potato dish from the Ukraine and Poland. The person who gave you the suggestions for spanikopita, tyropita etc. is on the right track…but saganaki isn’t fried feta cheese..it’s a cheese called kefalotiri..and it’s delicious.

You can’t go past a well-made Greek salad, or tzatziki.. the spinach/cheese triangles are always a winner, and perhaps you could have a few other little things such as stuffed vine leaves or taramosalata.
